Background

The Listvyazhnaya coal mine (шахта Листвяжная) is an underground coal mine in Kemerovo Oblast in Russia. The Listvyazhnaya coal mine is operated and owned by SDS UGOL, which in turn is owned by a holding company SDS (Siberian Business Union).

The capacity of the mine is stated 5.5 million tonnes, as per company's website.[10] In 2020 it produced 4.7 million tonnes.[11]

In November 2021, a methane leak at the mine caused a large accident that killed 51 workers and injured 106. The operations were suspended, the mine has not produced since then, the consequences of the explosion are being liquidated. The main reason of the explosion has been named as a consistently raised level of methane and poor ventilation equipment.[12] In March 2022, during accident liquidation works, 10 miners were hospitalized, presumably due to insufficient oxygen levels.[13]

In September 2022 the mine has submitted a project to resume mining operations.[14]

The mine resumed operations in April 2023 after receiving numerous technical and safety approvals.[15][16] The criminal case investigating the tragic accident in 2021 was still on-going, as of April 2023.[17]
