Background
Malawi's state-owned Power Market Ltd. (PML) appeared to list a proposed 350 MW coal-fired power project on its website by September 2022. The power station was to be developed in Liwonde, Machinga District, by Jindal Power Ltd. As of September 2022, the project had been approved by the Ministry of Energy to "proceed and conduct full feasibility studies."[3]
By the time that PML dissolved in early 2023,[4] the project was still listed on the PML website with the same status.[5]
According to reporting from June 2023 on PML's final list of Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) applications, which included the Liwonde project, "...people who got most of the PPA's have sold them or disappeared."[6]
As of October 2023, the Liwonde power station project did not seem to appear on Jindal's websites, nor on the website for the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), who took over PML's functions after it folded.[4]
There were no apparent developments on the power station project as of August 2024.
