Background

Lokuchakitsky Coal Mine (участок Локучакитский) is an UNDERGROUND mine in the Republic of Sakha, Russia. The Lokuchakitsky coal mine is owned and operated by Dolguchan LLC, which from 2006 is conducting exploration works and mining in the southern part of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The company holds a license to develop Lokuchakitsky section until 2025.[5] Dolguchan is owned by an ex-owner of Kolmar Anatoly Mitroshin.[6]

There is an existing surface mine that produced 0.2 million tonnes of coal in 2019 and there was a project to expand the open pit to 1.5 Mt in 2022. In addition, the company was planning to develop an underground mine by 2025 with 1.5 Mtpa of capacity.[1][5] It was planned to attract Japanese investors to build the mine with a view to export coking coal.[1][5] However as of October 2022, without any news on the project's progress, it appeared to be shelved.

In February 2023, it was reported that the mine produced 0.461 million tonnes of coal in 2022 and is planning to increase production to 1.1 million tonnes in 2023.[7] In addition, the company was also planning to start construction of a processing plant with a capacity of up to 1.5 million tonnes of coking coal and to increase the number of equipment by 100 units by the end of 2023.[7] Based on this information, the status of the expansion project was reversed from Shelved to Proposed.

In December 2024 it was reported that the processing plant with capacity of 1 million tonnes was successfully installed.[8] Current production levels of the surface mine were said to be 0.8 million tonnes[8], so the expansion appeared to be in progress.
