Background
The Lumbres cement plant is one of the oldest plants in Europe and the only remaining cement plant in Hauts-de-France. The plant is currently undergoing modernization as part of owner Equiom's K6 program. The goals of the program are to reduce the plant's carbon footprint by replacing the existing wet process kilns with a more modern dry process kiln, and to increase the amount of clinker produced in order to reduce the amount of clinker imported for cement production. Additionally, a cryocap Oxy Unit carbon capture system will be installed to further reduce emissions. Commissioning of the new kiln is expected to be completed in 2026.
