Background
In April 2010, the Maadurga Thermal Power Company Ltd. (MTPCL) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Odisha State government to build a 60 MW power station in the Cuttack district.[2]
As of January 2013, the power station had received environmental clearance and was in an advanced state of commissioning. The plant was expected to begin operating in June 2013.[3]
In November 2013, the India Ministry of Coal issued a Letter of Assurance that listed an expected commissioning in 2013 to 2014.[4]
In January 2016, it was reported that the power station was expected to begin operating in 2016.[5]
Between 2017 and 2019, the MTPCL website did not appear to indicate any updates in the project's status.[6][7] In June 2019, MTPCL announced that they were liquidating the company.[8] At the time, it was unclear if the power station had ever begun commercial operations.
In July 2023, the project appeared to be cancelled.
2024: Operation begins
After the project had previously been presumed cancelled, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) announced in its September 2024 report of installed generating capacity that Unit 1 had been commissioned in August 2024 and Unit 2 was commissioned in September 2024.[9]
