The Maddingley mine is a brown coal mine near Bacchus Marsh in Victoria which is owned by the Calleja Group. The mine produced brown coal from 1946 until 1998 for hospitals, paper mills and other industrial customers. The mine, which was bought by the Calleja Group in 1990, ceased coal sales with the closure of the CSR hardboard mill in 1998. Since the closure of the mine the Calleja Group have used the pit for the disposal and recycling of industrial waste.[1] The company continues to mine the brown coal for use as "organic fertilisers, soil conditioners and top soils".[2]
The current mining lease for the Maddingley mine is held by Mantle Mining which is currently exploring the area as part of its Bacchus Marsh coal project. Mantle has touted that its target is to see if it can delineate a 1 billion tonne brown coal resource and associated coal bed methane, underground coal gasification and coal-to-liquids projects.[3]
