Background
The Mafube coal mine is an opencast thermal coal mine co-owned by Exxaro and Thungela Resources Limited, in Middelburg, Steve Tshwete, Nkangala, Mpumalanga, South Africa.[12][13] The Mafube Coal Mine is a 50:50 joint operation co-owned by Exxaro and Thungela Resources Limited.[12] Fifty percent was previously held by Anglo American, but on June 4, 2021, Anglo American completed the demerger of its South African thermal coal assets, including the Mafube Mine, into a newly incorporated company, Thungela Resources Limited (Thungela).[14]
