Background

In January 2020, three power tower lines were destroyed near Jakana village, and thus the Maiduguri power plant was announced as an emergency plan.[7]

In April 2021, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) announced a plan for the gas-powered plant as a long-term solution to the constant attacks and destruction of power lines by the Boko Haram insurgents.[8]

In August 2021, the NNPC signed a contract with China Machinery Engineering Company (CMEC) and General Electric (GE) on the project meant to ensure gas supply to the state, which had been cut off since January 2021 following the insurgents’ attacks on lines along the Maiduguri-Damaturu Road on at least two occasions.[8]

In September 2021, the national oil company commenced the construction plant. The plant is expected to generate electricity for the capital city.[8]

The NNPC sought the cooperation of all stakeholders, especially GE and CMEC to ensure timely delivery of the single cycle by December 2021 and the combined cycle by the first quarter of 2022.[9]

In June 2022, it was announced that the NNPC independent gas-powered plant in Maiduguri, Borno State, will be completed by November 2022.[7]
