Background
The Maiganga coal mine is an operating mine in Akko, Gombe State, Nigeria.[3] Coal mining activities at Maiganga Mine are carried out by Ashaka Cement Company Limited (AshakaCem), a cement manufacturing and marketing company, owned by the France-based construction giant, Lafarge.[3][4]
Environmental Impacts
In 2016, the International Centre for Investigative Reporting wrote an editorial highlighting the negative environmental impacts of the mine's drainage and its effects on water quality of neighboring communities.[3] To effectively mine the coal, AshakaCem has to constantly drain the water that is inside the mine; this water then finds its way to nearby villages where it often mixes with the only source of water the villagers and their livestock depend on, and sometimes floods farmlands.[3][5]
