Background

The Maikubensky coal mine (Майкубенский разрез) is a surface coal mine near Maykain, Pavlodar region, Kazakhstan.[4]

The mine has several active pits: Shoptykolsky, Taldykol, and Sarykol. The mine is owned by Maikuben-West JSC. The company changed ownership several times. Until 2008 it was owned by AES Corporation when it sold the mine to Kazakhmys Plc.[5] However, it appears that Kazakhmys has later sold the asset. As per Maikuben's financial statements, as of December 2021, the sole shareholder is Premier Development Company (Kazakhstan).[6] The founders of Premier Development Company are Joint Resources (50%) and a private individual Mrs Elimesova (50%), a citizen of Kazakhstan.[6]

2013 production was 5.4 million tonnes a plan to increase production to 8.5 Mt by 2016, according to an outdated company's website.[7] In 2015 production is reported at a much lower level - 2.75 million tonnes.[8]

In 2021, the coal mine sold 3.8 million tonnes compared to 4 million tonnes in 2020.[6] It was assumed that production is approximately the same as volumes sold. Production in 2022 reached 4.2 million tonnes, 2.6 million tonnes of which was exported.[9]

In 2022, the Company established a strategic plan for 2022-2026 with the planned increase of production up to 6 Mt, the target date was not known.[9]
