Main production equipment

From Global Energy Monitor

The main steelmaking processes used in the GEM Global Steel Plant Tracker are defined as follows:

integrated: plants producing pig iron and crude steel on site, generally through a blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace configuration electrical: plants producing crude steel in melt shops, using electric arc furnaces oxygen: plants producing crude steel, but no pig iron through a basic oxygen steelmaking process like a basic oxygen furnace

The most common production equipment used in these processes includes:

  • blast furnace (BF)
  • basic oxygen furnace (BOF)
  • open hearth furnace (OHF)
  • electric arc furnace (EAF)
  • direct reduced iron plant (DRI).
