Background

The Malesice power station in Praha, Czech Republic was commissioned in 1969 and refurbished in 1998 for 1 billion Czech Koruna (CZK).[1] Along with heating plant Michle and heating plant Krč, the Malesice power station powers the Pražská Teplárenská heating company, which supplies nearly 40% of thermal energy market (including subsidiaries) in Prague, delivering heat for more than 270,000 households, office buildings, and more.[2]

Sometime in the 1990s, the Malešice power plant's fuel switched from brown coal to low sulphur hard coal. Recently, the operators installed gama ash meters in the plant to measure the ash content of hard coal supplied to its boilers.[1]

As of June 2021, there has been no announced retirement date. The plant is also currently not covered by the country’s phase-out scheme.[3]
