Background
Maple Leaf Cement Factory Limited (MLCFL) is a company that produces and sells cement. It was incorporated in April 1960 and is a subsidiary of Kohinoor Textiles Limited. In a notification sent to the bourse in 2017, MLCF announced the commencement of operations of a 40 MW coal-fired power plant by Maple Leaf Power Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the former. The notification read that the station will help the company meet its power requirements and add another reliable source of uninterrupted power supply, which would contribute in enormous savings in power costs.[1][2][3][4]
The power purchase agreement between Maple Leaf Cement Factory Limited and Maple Leaf Power Limited started in 2017 and is valid for 20 years.[5]
In its 2022 Annual report, Maple Leaf Cement reports that due to rising coal costs on the international markets, it managed to keep fuel costs under control by using Afghan coal and domestic coal despite the problems of inconsistent supply and quality issues, as well as using petroleum coke.[6]
In December 2023, Maple Leaf Power was in the process of building a 25 MW solar power plant at the existing coal-fired facility. The solar plant was expected to be operating by June 2024.[7]
