Marsh Fork Elementary School
From Global Energy Monitor
Marsh Fork Elementary School is located in Raleigh County, West Virginia and has been the center of coal mining in the area. A coal silo is located 150 feet from the school and a mountain removal mine is located 400 yards downslope of the school. Many parents, local residents and anti-coal groups are concerned that coal dust and other chemicals used in processing and mining coal may be drifting onto school grounds.[1]
The Goals Coal Processing Plant, located above the school, is operated by Massey Energy and houses the Shumate coal slurry impoundment, which is made up of 2.8 billion gallons of coal sludge held back by a 385-foot-high earthen dam. It is one of West Virginia’s largest impoundments.[2]
