Background

Martin Linge was discovered in 1978. Its plan for development and operations (PDO) was approved in 2012. The platform jacket was installed on the field in 2014 and the topside modules in 2018. The Norwegian Petroleum website states, as of February 2021, that "production is planned to start in mid-2020."[8] However, Offshore Engineer (OE) describes the project as "long-delayed" and "years behind schedule and billions of dollars over budget." OE notes that the project was originally scheduled for completion in 2016 under its then-operator Total, before Equinor took it over in 2018.[9] The COVID-19 pandemic[10] and safety violations[9] have delayed the project commissioning through 2020.

The field is slated to have rich gas transported via a new pipeline to the Frigg UK Gas Pipeline System then to the Shell-Esso Gas and Liquid (SEGAL) terminal at St Fergus in the UK. Oil and condensate are set to be transported via tanker.[11]

In January 2021, OE reported that Equinor had "breached safety regulations" at Martin Linge. "Serious breaches of the regulations were identified" according to the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA), including the reliability of detecting gas leaks and in the configuration of alarm systems.[10]

Equinor told OE in September 2020 that it expected the field to come online in 2021.[10]

The field came online in June 2021.[10]
