Background
Japanese MITSUI and Company Limited and the Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) will jointly build a regasified liquefied natural gas power plant, supplied by an LNG terminal.[2] The project will supply LNG to Matarbari LNG power station.[1]
In April 2019, CPGCBL put out a request for financial advisory services for the project.[3]
By the end of 2019, CPGCBL had purchased the land for the power plant.
One of the deals involves the local Summit Group, Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation and the US's General Electric Company, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and GE Switzerland. At an event in Bidyut Bhaban, BPDB and GE Switzerland decided to form a joint venture company to implement the project. The joint venture will conduct a feasibility study, develop 5,600 acres of land, construct and operate the power plant, and construct an LNG import terminal and infrastructure.[4]
The estimated project cost includes US $1.6 billion for land development and US $2.8 billion for the power plant. The expected completion time is 36 months.[4]
As of June 2024, there have been no project updates in over 4 years, and the project was presumed to be cancelled. This onshore terminal has been proposed to be developed by other investors and is described in more detail here: Matarbari LNG Terminal.
