The power station was mothballed as of March 2021 while it undergoes litigation due to noise, pollution, and health concerns from the local community.[12] Its parent company, Stoneway Capital, filed for bankruptcy in April 2021, and suggested in a disclosure statement that Matheu III and associated power stations could be relocated and restarted by new buyers.[13]
1810 Vecinos Unidos Por Pilar is an activist group following the litigation. In November 2022, Pilar residents described continued concern that Araucaria Energy would attempt to restart the Matheu plants.[14]
