Background

Mawan power station is a six-unit coal-fired power plant with a total capacity of 1,840 MW.[6] The plant was completed between 1993 and 2003, and is majority-owned by Shenzhen Energy Group.[7]

A 681 MW gas-fired power plant is expected to start operation in 2025 to replace the coal-fired units.[8] This project received approval from the Development and Reform Commission on February 16, 2022. [9]Construction officially began in September 2022, and it is expected to commence operation in June 2024.[10]
