Background
The Meandu coal mine is surface mine, operated by contractor Downer Mining, for Stanwell Corporation Limited (Stanwell), a state-owned electricity generator, near Kingaroy, Queensland, Australia.[5]
The mine produces coal for the Tarong Power Station and the Tarong North Power Station.
The company has proposed a life-of-mine extension, the King 2 East (K2E) Project, planned to open in 2024.[6] The mine is operated by Stanwell Corporation Limited, and previously under contract for Tarong Energy by Thiess[7] who initially considered purchase of the mine from Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) in February 2008.[8] Stanwell took over operations in 2011.[5]

Extension
As of 2022, Stanwell have proposed an extension of Meandu mine which will extend its life of mine until 2039. The anticipated commencement of mining is set for 2024.[11] The Meandu Mine King 2 East mine would produce an average of 5.3 million tonnes of coal per year over its 15 year life. This coal would be supplied exclusively to the adjacent Tarong power station.[12]
In November 2022, the project gained publicity for being one of several projects located in Great Barrier Reef catchments and floodplains that was exempted from needing an environmental impact statement (EIS) by the Queensland government because it is proposed it would produce less than two million tonnes of coal a year. Without an EIS, the public could be excluded from providing comments on the project's terms of reference. This would instead leave the mining company to largely define what issues they address in their environmental assessments.[13]
