Background
Originally a state-owned enterprise, the Medgidia Cement Plant was privatized in 1997 when it was acquired by the French multinational Lafarge. In 2015, following the global merger of Lafarge and Holcim, the newly formed entity was required to divest certain assets to comply with competition regulations. As a result, the Medgidia plant, along with other operations in Romania, was sold to the Irish building materials company CRH. On May 5, 2021, CRH reintroduced the historic Romanian brand "Romcim" for its local operations, including the Medgidia plant. In 2023, CRH developed a wind farm exclusively to power the Medgidia Cement Plant. The wind farm comprises five turbines with a total installed capacity of approximately 30 MW. It is expected to generate around 80 GWh annually. The renewable energy generated by the wind farm is projected to reduce Romania's national energy-related CO₂ emissions by approximately 40,000 tons annually.
