Background

Megalopolis Lignite Centre (MLC) is a network of surface coal mines, operated by Lignitiki Megalopolis SA, owned by the Public Power Corporation of Greece, in Western Macedonia, Greece.[13]

MLC provides power to the Megalopoli power station. The Megalopolis lignite deposit in Central Peloponese was evaluated for the first time in 1957. In 1969, Public Power Corporation began to exploit the lignite. The Megalopolis mine had started with an annual production of 1 million tonnes and reached a peak production of 12 million tonnes in 1996.[14]
