Background

In April 2022, the Mexican agency of the Environment and Natural Resources SEMARNAT halted development of the proposed Mérida Kanasín power station, citing Iberdrola's failure to comply with environmental regulations.[5][6]

Commenting on SEMARNAT's decision, Kanasín mayor Edwin Bojórquez noted that Iberdrola had not applied for any of the necessary permits to build the plant, which was to be located within the Anillo de Cenotes, home to the most important hydrological reserve on the Yucatán Peninsula.[7]
