Background

The Mezhegeyugol coal mine (шахта Межегейуголь) is an underground mine in Tyva Republic, Russia. The mine is owned by UK Mezhegeyugol LLC, which in turn is owned by Raspadskaya PJSC[7], a subsidiary of Evraz.[8] Evraz announced in December 2021 that it is planning to spin off Raspadskaya, but these plans were cancelled in March 2022 due to the sanctions against Russia.[9]

The designed capacity of the mine is 1.2 mtpa.[10]

Production at the mine was suspended in February 2020 due to adverse market conditions.[11] Operations resumed in 2022.[11]

Production reached 0.56 million tonnes in 2022.[7] As of mid-2022, the mine planned increase production to previous levels of about 1.2 million tonnes in the next 3 years.[12]

Russia's 'Programme for Coal Industry Development up to 2035', released in June 2020, stated an expansion project for the mine, first to 1.8 Mtpa and then to 6 Mtpa by 2030.[13] However as of 2022 and June 2023 the project appeared to be shelved.
