MidlandCARES
MidlandCARES is a citizens group formed to oppose the Midland Power Plant in Midland, Michigan. The group’s stated mission is “to encourage education and community dialogue about Clean Energy Resources and Energy Efficiency Programs" and to "promote the development of healthy, sustainable and renewable energy resources that will allow Michigan to advance as a leader in this new industry and protect environmental and public health.”[1]
MidlandCARES members regularly attend and speak out at relevant city and county meetings to inform the community and create a documented record of opposition to the proposed plant. Alliances with the Sierra Club and National Resources Defense Council have provided legal and technical expertise to the group. In February 2008, MidlandCares conducted a successful "guerilla media" operation when Mid Michigan Energy sponsored a Community Forum at a local event center. The group rented the space next door to the Mid Michigan Energy event and coordinated a last-minute surprise media campaign to invite community members to discuss the pro and con points of view on the coal plant.[2]
