Millennium Mine

From Global Energy Monitor

Millennium Mine is a surface mine in Queensland's Bowen Basin, Australia, owned by Peabody Energy. Peabody finished purchasing the remaining 15.4% share of the Millennium Mine in 2008 from the former minority shareholders for $110.1 million. Peabody began operations in 2007, and manage the mine utilizing a contract miner. During 2008, the Millennium Mine sold 1.3 million tons of metallurgical coal through the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, primarily to customers in India.[1]

According to Peabody's website, coal from Millennium possesses a higher percentage of vitrinite, a mineral which contributes to a higher quality steel. Peabody is ramping up to produce up to 3 million tons of low-ash coking and low- to mid-volatile PCI (pulverized coal injection) product by 2010. The Millennium Preparation Plant can create sized coals within plus or minus 20 millimeters for niche international markets.[2]
