Background
MinKush Coal Mine is a coal mine in Jumgal, Naryn Region, Kyrgyzstan. In December 2022, Kyrgyz Komur restarted activity at Min-Kush, in the 'Agulak' section. It was mothballed in 1989 due to large overburden volumes, while the use of modern technology allows to reduce overburden when extracting coal.[2][3] Local residents were concerned about traces of uranium which was previously mined in the area.[2]
It is understood that there are other smaller companies operating in Minkush area, in December 2017 it was reported that seven companies were involved in coal mining.[4][5] Local residents were concerned about the environmental impact of their activities.
According to a video news report from January 2023, preparation works were being conducted with a plan to start coal production later that year.[3]
In the second half of 2023, it was reported that a Chinese company Shanci Coal Investment Group LLC will be extracting coal at Ak-Ulak. Joint activity agreement between Kyrgyzkomur and Shanci Coal Investment Group LLC was signed.[6] The tender for exploration and production was reportedly won by a Kyrgyz-Chinese company with a plan to achieve 2 Mtpa capacity.[7]
In September 2024 it was reported that 0.18Mt of coal from the Agulak section of the mine was being supplied to Bishkek power station for the winter season.[8] Coal production has reportedly commenced in mid-2024.[1]
However in a media source from October 2024 it was mentioned that the lignite coal mine section was transferred to the municipality of Bishkek, while previous works were conducted by Kyrgyzkomur and the Chinese company. [9][10]
