The mine started operations in 2007, and has been owned and operated by the Rosebud Mining Company of J Clifford Forest since then.[2]
Mine 78 was on alist of 111 "troubling mines" in 2010 that required additional inspection. The same year, the mine was sued by the MSHA after the surface personnel warned the underground workers of inspectors arrival.[3]
In 2020, Mine 78 produced 0.6 million short tons of coal, and had 78 employees.[2]
