Mine 84
Mine 84 is an underground coal mining operation in Washington, Pennsylvania, owned by CONSOL Energy.
On October 1, 2010, Consol said it will close Mine 84 in December 2010 because of the operating costs. The company will also idle its Emery Mine in Utah. The moves come as Consol has been diversifying away from coal, acquiring the 17% of CNX Gas it didn't already own in June 2010, and earlier buying Dominion Resources' natural gas business. Pearce Hammond, director of institutional research with Simmons & Co. International, said there's no need for excess coal in the market, especially when prices for the thermal coal used in power plants are under pressure.[1]
On June 30, 2011, CONSOL Energy announced the closure of its Mine 84. The action was seen as part of the company's ongoing efforts to reallocate resources to more profitable coal operations and Marcellus Shale gas drilling activities. Going forward, CONSOL said it will re-assess the opportunities to access the metallurgical reserves in the Mine 84 area.[2]
