Background

The construction of the power station began in February 2023 on the territory of the Azerbaijan Thermal Power Plant at the premises of steam turbine units 7 and 8.[11][12] AzerEnerji singed a contract with Italian Ansaldo Energia for the delivery and installation of four AE94.3A gas turbines for the amount EUR 160 million.[12] As of March 2024, the construction is 90-95% complete, and the power station is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2024.[13]

As a result of connecting the new power station and units 7 and 8 of the Azerbaijan Thermal Power Plant (TPP), the total capacity of the energy unit will reach 1,880 MW increasing the efficiency coefficient from 18% to 56%. The exhaust gas from the Mingecevir power station will be utilized to convert water into steam, allowing energy to be obtained without additional gas processing in the steam turbines units 7 and 8 of the Azerbaijan TPP, thus, saving 800 million cubic meters of gas per year.[13]

In September 2024 it was reported that four gas turbines, manufactured by Ansaldo Energia, had already been delivered to Azerbaijan and were being installed. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2024 or early 2025.[14] Once built, the power station will become the largest power plant in Azerbaijan.[15]
