Background
Minsk CHP-5 branch is the youngest power plant of the Belarusian energy system and the first large thermal power plant in the CIS, put into operation after the collapse of the USSR.
At the location of the branch, it was originally planned to build the country's first nuclear power plant with an electric capacity of 2,000 MW and a thermal capacity of 1,800 Gcal/h. At the first stage, which lasted from 1985-1991, the PRK was put into operation, consisting of four steam boilers GM-50-14/250 and a hot-water boiler KVGM-100-150, designed both to ensure operations for the start-up of NPP power units, and and for heat supply of the industrial area and settlements of the settlement of Druzhny, the town of Rudensk and the town of Svisloch.
After the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, it was decided to stop the construction of the nuclear power plant, and to build a thermal power plant operating on organic fuel on this site. This decision made it possible to retain the professional team of power engineers of 2,500 people that had been formed by that time and use the existing infrastructure.
The second stage ended with the commissioning of the first power unit with a capacity of 320 MW on August 4, 1999, as part of the steam turbine TK-330-240-ZM, the steam boiler TGMP-354, the generator TZV-320-2 UZ, the block transformer TDTs-400000/330/ 20, ORU-330 and ORU-110.
The third stage: in accordance with the "State Comprehensive Program", the construction of the CCGT Power Unit (with a capacity of 399.6 MW under ISO conditions (condensing), which was put into operation on June 30, 2012, began, the first connection of the gas turbine to the network was made on December 25, 2011.[20]
New construction
In 2020, construction of the peak-reserve power sources (units GT1-GT6) began, which are needed to cover peak electricity consumption.[21] Siemens was expected to supply the gas turbines for the new units.[22][23] However, after the start of the war, Siemens put all new business and international deliveries to Russia and Belarus on hold.[24][25]
In October 2022, it was reported that the construction of GT1-GT6 units had been extended by another year.[21] According to Belenergo, the construction of the first phase of the project commenced in November 2023 based on Siemens SGT-800 gas turbines. Once built, the new units will be providing capacity reserve for the country's first nuclear power plant in case of outages.[26] In February 2024, Minister of Energy of Belarus announced that the construction had been completed and the plant would be commissioned in 2024.[27] In July 2024, it was reported that the units had been commissioned.[28]
