Background
Modderfontein Colliery is a proposed surface coal mine near Delmas and along the Mpumalanga-Gauteng border in South Africa.[2] Modderfontein Colliery is owned by South Africa-based Xakwa Coal. It is situated approximately 14 km west of the town of Delmas. The proposed mine will be located on portions 6, 7, 13, and 16 of the farm Modderfontein 236 IR, however, actual mining is planned for portion 6.[2] The operation is estimated to cover an area of 401.22 hectares, and requires the clearance of indigenous vegetation.[2] The estimated life of mine is approximately 10 years.[2]
As of April 2021, Xakwa Coal has submitted an application for an environmental authorization and a waste management license.[2]
