Background
Mokhovsky coal mine (Моховский разрез) is a surface coal mine, in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.[11] The Mokhovsky coal mine is operated by Kuzbgassrazrezugol, which is owned by Ural Mining Metallurgical Company.
The history of the Mokhovsky coal mine dates back to 1966.[11]
Today's Mokhovsky coal mine was formed in 2009 by merging three surface mine sections - Mokhovsky, Sartakinsky and Karakansky. The sections are quite far apart from each other - from 5 to 25km, and the coal mine stretches across three administrative districts.[11] Upon the merger of the three sections, the coal mine's capacity reached close to 7 million tonnes.[12]
In 2003, an underground mine was developed on the territory of the Mokhovsky section, which was later developed into a separate Baykaimskaya coal mine.[12]
The mine was temporarily idled in 2019 after a 50% coal price collapse in the European markets, which resulted in the coal mine being loss-making. The CEO said. "If the situation [on the market] doesn't change, there will be a loss in production and a halting of the activity of individual branches of our coal company."[13] Production was then resumed and the mine was producing in 2020 and 2021.
There are no 2022 production figures, however Kuzbassrazrezugol reported in its 2022 annual report that the volume of well drilling and the volume of rock blasting at the mine increased by 8% and 12%, respectively, compared with 2021. This can be an indication that production increased in 2022.[14]
