Background
In August 2019, the Herald reported that Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) was granted a license to build a 120 MW plant in Mutare by the Zimbabwe Electricity Regulatory Authority (ZERA). The plant was intended to run on diesel and later on gas.[4]
In 2022, the plant was expected to come online.[5]
However, in April 2020, ZESA Holdings abandoned its $US 100 million because of the high costs of running the facility. ZESA reported it had since redirected the loan towards other capital projects including strengthening the electricity distribution network and acquisition of new utility vehicles.[5]
