Myanmar Economic Corporation(MEC) is an agency of Burma's Ministry of Defence.
A review of Burma's military regime by an Asian think tank stated that MEC is "involved in a wide range of economic activities including trading companies, agriculture produce, hotel and tourism enterprises, gems and mineral extraction and exploration, extraction and sale of petroleum and natural gas, telecommunications and other enterprises that were previously government monopolies."[1]
Coal interests
MEC has a 30-year concession for the exploitation of the Maw Taung coal mine near Taninthayi in Taninthayi state. The mine, which is operated by MEC and Saraburi Coal Company, a subsidiary of Italian-Thai Development, is based on a 3.6 million deposit of sub-bituminous coal.[2]
