Background

In 2008, the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) sought approval from the Karnataka state government to set up a 5 mtpa steel plant in Karnataka. The company was then considering areas like Bellary, Hospet and Sandur in the jurisdiction of the Vijayanagar Area Development Authority for constructing the plant. In 2011, it was announced that NMDC will set up a 5 mtpa steel plant in Bellary, Karnataka in collaboration with Russian steel maker OJSC Severstal, by investing INR 9,000 crore. In 2014, NMDC was in the process of acquiring 3,000 acres of land in Bellary for construction of the steel plant.In July 2015, NMDC announced that it will establish a 3 mtpa steel plant in Bellary, Karnataka in collaboration with the state government at an estimated investment of INR 18,000 crore. It also announced that it will increase the capacity from 3 mtpa to 6 mtpa at a later stage.

As of January 2023, NMDC was still looking for land in Karnataka for setting up the plant.
