Background

1,200 MW

According to a March 2016 report, an MoU was signed between Mozambique and Zambia for a 1,200 MW coal plant in Nacala (allegedly), the city in Nampula province where Mozambique's Nacala port is located. The plant would also power Zambia.[1] Note: Other reports referenced a 1,200 MW proposal for the Tete province instead, which is much closer to Zambia, as noted here: Tete power station.[2][3]

200 MW

In August 2019, it was reported that China Energy Engineering Corporation and Moroccan port and civil engineering specialist Somagec Mozambique were planning to build a 200 MW coal-fired power station in Nacala. The estimated cost was US$355 million. Operation was planned for 2022. Coal would be supplied by Vale Moçambique from Moatize, Tete province. An Environmental Pre-Feasibility and Scoping Study had been submitted.[4]

The power station was budgeted at around 21.7 billion meticais (around US$340 million).[5]

With no known developments on the project since 2019, the power station was presumed cancelled as of December 2023.
