Background on existing power plant

The existing 1,900 MW Nanyang Yahekou power station consists of four units. Two units of 350 MW each were brought online in 1998-9, and two more units of 600 MW each went online in 2008. The plant is owned by Nanyang Yahekou Electric Power Co Ltd.[1]

Expansion

Nanyang Yahekou Electric Power has proposed adding two additional units (Units 5 and 6) of 1,000 MW each to the power station. A preliminary assessment of the project feasibility report was held in 2012.[2] Preparatory planning was ongoing as of 2014.[3]

Suspension

In March 2016 China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) released guidelines for regulating coal power development to crack down on the severe and growing coal power overcapacity crisis. 13 provinces were told to suspend new approvals through 2017, including Henan. For details, see China's 2016 Restrictions on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity.
