Background

The Nastup Tusimice coal mine is a surface mine near Chomutov and Kadan, Czech Republic.[8] The mine is owned and operated by Severočeské doly A.S which in turn is owned by ČEZ Group.

Severočeské doly is the largest Czech brown coal mining company. It also operates Bilina coal mine. In 2021, Severočeské doly sold a total of 15.9 million tonnes of coal 2021, 11.7 of which was to the power plants within CEZ Group.[9] In 2022, the company sold 17.8 million tonnes of coal, the reason for the significant increase was mainly due to the energy crisis in Europe and the need to secure the electricity missing from the gas supply.[10]

Coal is transported from the mine by belt conveyors to the Tusimice power station (ČEZ) or to a loading hopper with subsequent further rail transport to the designated customers.[11] In 2021, 7.9 million tonnes of coal were mined, destined to the local power plants Tusimice power station and Prunerov power station and to a lesser extent by rail transport to the power plants Melnik power station and Opatovice power station. Coal production from the mine in 2022 increased to 8.6 million tonnes.[12]

Czech Republic committed to phase out coal by 2033.[13] In late 2024 the Czech government approved an updated national energy plan that states that all coal mining is to be ceased by 2033.[14]

In June 2024 it was reported that the government has approved the future flooding of the mine. The Libouš water reservoir will be created after the end of mining in the Nástup Tušimice quarry in the Chomutov region. It is planned to connect it with Nechranice, which will be connected by a canal more than three kilometers long. Coal mining was said to cease some time between 2030-2040.[15] Another source from July 2024 referred to discussions at CEZ board meeting, which referred to the plan to cease coal mining by 2033 and possibly earlier by 2030.[16]

In 2024, Severočeské doly A.S supplied to the market 14 million tonnes of coal from the Nastup Tusimice coal mine and the Bilina Coal Mine, a decrease compared to 15.64 million tonnes in 2023.[17]
