Background

Nazarovsky Coal Mine (Назаровский разрез) is a surface mine in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. The Nazarovsky coal mine is owned and operated by SUEK-Krasnoyarsk JSC, a subsidiary of Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK).

The mine has a significant amount of overburden and a very large operation is in place to remove surface material from the mining site, this is due to the fact that coal is up to 70 metres below the surface.

The main consumer is Nazarovskaya power station.

The mine has a reported production of approximately 4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa).

Production in the first 6 months of 2022 reached 1.8 million tonnes, which is 55% higher than in the same period in 2021. Production volumes at the Krasnoyarsk mines of SUEK are driven by the needs of thermal power stations, which vary depending on hydrology in a given year. In 2022 due to low water levels in the river Yenisey hydro generation was lower than usual. The mine produced 3.8 million tonnes in 2022 which was the highest level in the past 10 years.
