Background
The New Creek mine is an opencast sub-bituminous coal mine northeast of Westport on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The mine is owned by New Zealand Coal & Carbon Limited. New Creek Mine is located 40 kilometres (25 miles) east of the township of Westport, on the South Island’s West Coast within the Inangahua coalfield.[2][3]
The mine was originally opened for limited domestic use. New Creek Mining Limited purchased the operation from a local operator in 2010 with export markets in mind.[2] Its coal is a high sulphur, sub-bituminous coal, which is suitable for cement and thermal applications.[2]
