Background on Mine
Initially, the New Majri II (A) OC mine was granted Environment Clearance for expansion from 1.0 MTPA capacity to 2.0 MTPA capacity in Mine Lease (ML) area of 432.02 ha by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) on 19th May 2005. [1] Further, Environment Clearance for New Majri II (A) Opencast Coal Mine Expansion Project, for expansion of production from 2.0 MTPA to 2.50 MTPA and ML area from 432.02 ha to 774.538 was granted on 19th May 2009. [2]
The New Majri II (A) Opencast Mine is located near Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve and falls in the corridor of Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench Tiger Reserve, Navegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve, Melghat Tiger Reserve, Bor Wildlife Sanctuary, and Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. The mining in the wildlife corridor may lead to increased Human-Wildlife Conflict in the area.
