Background
In March 2025, Botswana’s Minerals and Energy Minister announced that the government was considering building a 615 MW coal-fired power station to “avert a power crisis” pending ongoing remedial works on Morupule B power station. The new proposed coal plant would reportedly be a “fast-tracked” brownfield project built within 18–24 months, likely near the existing Morupule B power station.[2][3][4] If built, the new Morupule coal plant would reportedly be decommissioned after the country secures “adequate base load,” which one news article said was anticipated in 2028.[5]
