The Newlands Rail System is owned and operated by QR National and is located at the northern end of the Bowen Basin in North Queensland. This railway line services 3 mines supplying coal for export from the Abbot Point Coal Terminal as well as domestic coal to the Queensland Nickel Refinery and the Bowen Coke Works. The Newlands system is comprised of 190 km of single track used by diesel trains.[1]
QR National states that the Goonyella and Abbot Point Expansion Project is currently underway to link the Newlands system with the Goonyella Rail System via a new 69 km railway. The expansion caters for the expansion of the Abbot Point Coal Terminal to 50 Mtpa.[1]
