NextGen Energy Facility
Not to be confused with the U.S. Department of Energy’s similarly-named FutureGen project, the NextGen Energy Facility would use standard pulverized coal technology. Basin Electric is considering four locations in the Selby or Pierre area.[1]
Initial “public scoping” meetings were held in August 2007.[2] The Draft Environmental Impact Statement is scheduled to be issued in the fall of 2008. Construction would begin in 2010.
On November 14, 2008, the South Dakota Department of Natural Resources (DENR) determined that Basin Electric's permit application was complete.[3]
According to an April 2009 Sierra Club update, the South Dakota DENR continues to review Basin Electric's air permit application.[4]
On May 18, 2009, Basin Electric requested that the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources suspend the air permitting process for the plant because it was "re-evaluating its timeline for development of NextGen because of the current regulatory, technology, and economic uncertainties."[5]
