Background on Mine

The Niljai Opencast Coal Mine is located south of Ukni Opencast Mine and north of Bellora Coal Mine. The main consumers of the mine are thermal plants of MAHAGENCO.

In recent years, the mine has undergone multiple expansions. The Environment Clearance (EC) from India's Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) for the mine's expansion from a production capacity of 2.60 MTPA to 3.5 MTPA was granted in February 2009.[10]

In October 2015, the EC from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) for expansion in Mine Lease area from 1346.63 ha to 1761.22 ha at the existing production capacity of 3.5 MTPA at Niljai Opencast Coal Mine project was granted.[11]

In 2017, Western Coalfields Limited began seeking approval to expand the mine's capacity from 3.50 MTPA to 4.90 MTPA within the existing EC land area of 1761.22 hectares. The expansion is planned to occur in two phases: the first phase during which capacity will increase to 4.5 MTPA, and the second, during which it will increase to 4.90 MTPA.[12]
