Background

The project is developed by Uzbekugol. Nisbash is a section of the Angren lignite coal field where the Angren coal mine operates.

In June 2017 Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved the "Program for Further Development and Modernization of the Coal Industry until 2021" which included a plan to develop the 4 million tonne per year Nishbash coal mine by 2022. The development of the mine was estimated to cost USD 175 million in 2017.

In 2020, the project remained listed on the government's "Scheduled prospective projects for consideration in 2021 and funding in subsequent years".

IEA's 2022 report on Uzbekistan stated that 3.2 million tonnes were expected to come from the new mine by 2024, but already in 2019 this target seemed unlikely to be met.

Information on the project's status is limited. In an interview from October 2022, Uzbekugol stated that "13 wells were drilled at Nisbash with a total volume of over 4000 metres. All drilled wells were subject to a geophysical survey (GIS)." Therefore as of the end of 2022, it appeared that the project was still alive.
