Background

Nkomati Anthracite Mine is a surface and underground coal mine near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Nkomati Anthracite Mine is situated within the Kangwang Coalfield, 11 km west of the Mozambiquen border, in the Nkomazi Local Municipality of Mpumalanga's Ehlanzeni District.[2]

Although Nkomati's mining right covers an area of 9,000 hectares, its open pit, underground workings, and wash plant cover an area of roughly 400 hectares.[3]

The long-term sustainable life of mine plan has been enhanced through the opening of two opencast pits and work has begun on opening the underground operations.[4] The mine, which produces a high-quality product sold into the local market, has a life of 20+ years.[5]

Extension

Within the Nkomati property, plans for the Madadeni Opencast Northern Extension project exist.[6] However, the current status of the project is unclear.

During the project's exploration survey, six heritage sites were located within the study area. The sites comprised archaeological resources (one Stone Age site/findspot), three grave or possible grave sites and the foundations of a recent/modern structure.[6] Surprisingly, these finds did not stop project planning. Rather, the project's heritage impact assessment recommends that a destruction permit be acquired from the South African Heritage Resources Agency prior to destruction of said sites; that all graves and burial sites be preserved in situ, or if preservation is not possible, a grave relocation process must be undertaken; and that an archaeologist/heritage specialist be on-site to advise on the appropriate mitigation measures.[6]
