Background
No. 8 and No. 1/2 Coal Mine are underground mines in Isfara, Tajikistan.[7] The mine is operated by Angisht JSC, the company appears to be owned by state-owned Angishti Tojik (Tajik Coal).[8]
The mine is located in the northern part of the Shurab coal deposit.[7] The length of the mine field is 3.8 km, the width is 1.3 km, the area is 4.9 km2, the absolute height is 1015-1350 m.[7] With depth of 500m, it is the deepest mine in Tajikistan.
The annual volume of coal produced was about 55 thousand tonnes (as of 2017).[7] Production in 2020 reached 74 thousand tonnes, according to media sources[9][10], and 91 thousand tonnes in 2021.[11]
One source referred to the mine's production of 92 thousand tonnes in the 8 moths of 2023.[12] However other sources contradicted this information. A media source from February 2024 referred to declining coal production in the recent years due to old and worn out equipment, with production having dropped from 30-40 thousand in the recent years to 3-4 thousand tonnes(presumably, per year). The management of Angisht JSC was trying to attract investors to introduce new technological lines and was negotiating with one of the Chinese companies in this regard.[6] Another source from March 2023 stated that the mine was producing producing 32,000 annually.[5]
Incidents
In March 2023, it was reported that two miners lost their lives due to a carbon monoxide leak at the 'Angishti Shurob' mine. This is not the first time miners have died. In 2021, an explosion at the mine killed one person and injured several others. The explosion was causedd by gas escaping from underground tunnels at the mine.
