North-South Gas Pipeline (Russian: газопровод Север-Юг) is a proposed gas pipeline in Kyrgyzstan.[1]

Location

The pipeline is proposed to run from the north to the south of Kyrgyzstan (from Amanbayevo to Uch-Korgon).[1][2]

Project details

  • Operator: Gazprom Kyrgyzstan[1]
  • Owner: Gazprom PJSC[2]
  • Parent company: Gazprom PJSC[3]
  • Capacity: 0.24 bcm/y[4], 0.33 bcm/y[5]
  • Length: 600 km[4]
  • Diameter: 500 mm[4], 400 mm[5]
  • Status: Proposed[2]
  • Start year:
  • Cost: 65 million RUB[6]
  • Financing: Gazprom[6]

Background

The project was included in the General Gas Supply and Gasification Plan of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan till 2030 issued in January 2015.[1] If implemented, the gas coming from Russia through Kazakhstan will directly supply the Osh, Jalal-Abad, and Batken regions.[2] The pipeline will connect and source gas from the Bukhara-Tashkent-Bishkek-Almaty Gas Pipeline.[1]

In 2015, the construction of the pipeline was reported to be cancelled due to its high cost.[7] The same year, it was mentioned in the media that there were discussions about changing the route of the pipeline to run in the western direction.[5]

The pipeline construction was brought up again in September 2024, with Gazprom Kyrgyzstan stating that the project is ready for implementation. However, if Gazprom Kyrgyzstan finalizes its acquisition of Kyrgyzneftegaz (ongoing negotiations), the pipeline may no longer be necessary. Instead, Kyrgyzstan would focus on developing its own oil and gas fields to supply gas to its population.[2]
