Background

Nova was discovered in 2012 and was formerly known as Skarjell.[12] The field's plan for development and operation (PDO) was approved in 2018.[13] In October 2020, project operators commenced drilling the first of the total six development wells in the Nova field.[14]

Nova is being developed as a subsea tie-back to the Gjøa platform. Oil and gas is expected to be transported via a 65 km pipeline from Nova to the Gjøa gas field.[15]

The project was expected to come on stream in 2021.[16] However, according to project operator Wintershall Norge, "due to the impact of Covid-19 on the topside part of the project" it is now expected to come on stream in 2022.[17] As of February 2, 2021, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate expects production to start at the field in "early 2022."

Once onstream, Nova is expected to produce for approximately nine years.[15]
